Material Group - Hardened steel


Hardened steel is usually a medium or high carbon steel with hardness greater than 45 – 68 HRC which has undergone heat treatment, quenching, followed by tempering. A component made of this material has the appropriate combination of hardness, strength and toughness for intended applications such as tools and machine parts i.e. bearing and drive shafts, wear parts, etc.
This material group includes carburizing steel (~60 HRc), ball bearing steel (~60 HRc) and tool steel (~68 HRc).

Material Group -Hardened cast iron materials, Chilled cast iron

Hardened cast iron materials include white cast iron (~50 HRc) and austempered ductile iron (~40 HRc).
Rapid cooling can be used to solidify a shell of white cast iron, while the core cools at a lower rate to form a grey cast iron center. This is called a chilled cast iron that combines a hard surface with a tough interior. This kind of material is used for the production of camshafts, rolls, tilt hammer anvils and bits, plowshares, bushes, cart-wheel boxes, etc.

Construction steels (40–45 HRc) and Mn-steels, most stellite alloys, and cemented carbides also belong to this group.
